•Where to Eat

Cork City

You can find all kinds of restaurants in Cork, varying in price and quality. Among personal favorites are the following:

Ruen Thai Restaurant, Patrick Street, is ideal for lunch from noon to 3pm or dinner from 5 to 11:30 pm. Allow time and relax; you can stay all evening. tel. (021) 427-6127.

Café Paradiso, Western Road, on way to the University, is considered one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the whole country. It's so popular that it never advertises and is always busy, so book ahead. tel. (021) 427-7939.

Scoozies, on Winthrop Lane off Winthrop Street, in city center, serves reasonably priced home-made burgers, pizzas, salads, fish and meat dishes, good service, has tables outdoors for smokers. tel. (021) 427-5077.

East Cork

The Farmgate Restaurant, Midleton, is the original branch; the other is in the English Market in Cork City. It's very popular for snacks, lunch and dinner, and you can also stock up on local produce in the shop. You eat surrounded by flowers, paintings and crafts made by locals. One section is outdoors. The menu includes traditional Irish as well as European dishes, and there are daily specials. In the evenings, a pianist performs on the baby grand, and you can make requests. Very good value and a unique ambience. Open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5 pm, and Thursday-Saturday, 7:30-9:45 pm. tel. (021) 463-2777.

In Youghal, Ahernes Seafood Bar and Gourmet Restaurant has delighted palates for decades. Locally landed seafood shares the menu with meat and vegetarian dishes. tel. (024) 92424.

West Cork

At Heron's Cove, in Goleen, diners can also stay overnight. It specializes in fish, also offering steaks and delicious vegetarian dishes, including Desmond Cheese and Rocket Risotto. tel. (028) 35225, www.heronscove.com.

Mary Anne's, the pub and restaurant halfway down Castletownsend's steep street, serves delicious snacks and meals, and in winter there's a roaring fire and lots of chat.tel. (028) 36146.

The Kinsale Chamber produces a great free brochure, Eating Around.
