Around that same time, Khosrow assumed direct control of the southern borders from the subordinate Arabian king. This vassal kingdom was established around the same time as the Sasanian empire to act as a buffer between it and the Arab tribes. As it obviously wasnât fulfilling its role anymore, Khosrow thought that direct Sasanian control would stop the Arab intrusions. And instead of strengthening borders with the Bedouin Arabs, this weakened them, as it disturbed the power balance among their tribes. The result was that the Arabs started plundering lower Mesopotamia, even managing to achieve a decisive victory over the Sasanian army around 609. But more important than that was the change on the Byzantine throne. After a military coup, a new emperor named Phocas came to power in 602 which caused open rebellion across the empire. Khosrow used the excuse that he had to avenge his former protector and his rightful heirs to restart the war with the Byzantines. It was perfect timing as his forces were successful on all fronts. His armies first took Armenia, then marched into Cappadocia, present-day central Turkey. Another army marched into Syria, and by 610, Sasanid rule expanded over the region, finally reaching the Mediterranean Sea. That very same year, Phocas was overthrown, and Heraclius became the new Roman emperor. He tried to make peace with the Persians, but Khosrow declined, wanting to achieve more. As the campaigns in the west were in full swing, the Turks once again thought they could raid unprotected eastern borders. They were not only driven back, but the Sasanian forces also managed to pillage their territories around 607, bringing peace to the east and allowing Khosrow to focus completely on the fight with the Byzantine Empire.
