However, upgrades are very risky;

–Loss of power – Should the device, especially an IoT device lose power half why through a Firmware upgrade it could result in bricking the device.

–Networks errors – Again firmware upgrades can take considerable time and any failure or glitch on the network can cause the upgrade to fail.

–Insufficient Storage – some hardware versions just do not have the physical requirements to support the latest firmware upgrades which will result in failure and a bricked device.

–Incompatibilities – Not all versions of the same manufacturer’s hardware, drivers or devices use the same firmware which leads to compatibility issues with hardware and software.

–Lack of libraries or prerequisites – Lesser known manufacturers or clones may not have available libraries, drivers or firmware available especially if they have been bought over or gone out of business.

–NAND errors – These are memory errors that can come about through data corruption, noise or poor signal quality.

–Hash signatures and checksum errors – Hash signatures would be highly beneficial to IoT firmware upgrades as they would ensure the integrity of the firmware package unfortunately not many IoT devices have the intelligence to verify the hash signature.
