I don’t know what the heck just crawled up Kade’s ass, but we’re discussing it, right after I get my things from Frankie.

“Follow me, Holt,” Frankie instructs me, as we walk to the back toward his office. “Just ignore Kade, he’ll chill out. He seems to think I’m some sort of pervert of something, when in all actuality, it’s just the nature of the job.”

“I understand. I’ll speak with him in a few minutes.”

We enter the office. He’s got a long couch across the back wall, and two chairs up near his desk. I opt for the chair. Frankie digs through some paperwork, and finds a pen.

“This is the rental agreement, and these are the terms of the job, referring to what is expected. I’ll give you a week advance payment. Go pick up something to wear on stage, a couple things actually. I want you starting tonight.”

“Okay, do I get a key to the room?”

“Of course, why wouldn’t you? Be dressed and ready tonight around seven. The shows don’t start until nine, but you are to mingle with the customers. If anyone gets too far out of hand, let me know.”

Frankie hands me six hundred dollars and the key to the room. I’m ready to finally get a place. No more sleeping in the truck. I open the door and walk inside. My room is just as bad as Kade’s. Junked up and trashed. First thing I’m buying is a plastic cover for the bed. I don’t need any kind of critters, or whatever else there is on that thing, and cleaning supplies. If it’s going to be my first place on my own, I’m setting it up a lot better than this. Maybe some paint too if he’ll allow it, all the necessities. And I need to ask Kade what he means by outfits. I toss the lease agreement on the bed and walk across the hallway, knocking on the door.

“It’s open,” Kade hollers from inside.

I turn the knob and walk in. “Hey, can we talk a minute?” I close the door behind me.

“Since you’re already inside my room, I guess I don’t have a choice much.” He turns, unpacking his backpack.

“What was all that about? I mean you work here, it can’t be that bad right?”

“Like I said, Holt, you’re on your own now. You decided to do something stupid, I’m not getting tied up behind it. You’ll figure it all out soon enough.”

“Figure what out, Kade?” I walk over in front of him.

He looks up at me. “Nothing. Pretty slick how I’m getting thrown out behind you and you’re taking up residence instead, huh, Holt? Have that all planned out?” He stands straight up looking up toward me.

I reach out for his hand and see him flinch, then look down. His hand is swelled up huge, and covered in blood.

“Oh my God, what happened to you? Come here.” I jerk him by his other hand to the bathroom sink. “We need to get you cleaned up. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, quit acting like you’re my mother.
