ASSOCIATED HEALTH CONDITIONS
In general, diabetes leads to increased strain on the entire body and its organs. Thus, organ dysfunction and failure are common health conditions associated with diabetes. This includes failure of the kidneys, eyes, nerves, blood vessels and heart. These conditions result in part from the chronic hyperglycemia and decreased blood flow characteristic of people suffering from diabetes. On an average, diabetes reduces the life span by 15 years, and has varying effects on the quality of life remaining. Due to the effects of diabetes on the organs, it is the leading cause of blindness, end-stage renal failure and nontraumatic amputation in Canadian adults. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in individuals with diabetes and, as noted, is much more common than in the nondiabetic population.
In addition, the physical effects of diabetes, including high blood sugar levels and poor nutrient absorption, lead to higher rates of clinical depression, which in turn often leads to non-compliance with treatment regimes, causing further progression of the disease and its complications. Overall, diabetics are approximately four times more likely to be admitted to hospital than the non-diabetic population. As rates of diabetes increase, both in the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations, so will rates of comorbidities and complications, and inevitably hospital admissions, and thus will increase economic strain on the health care system.
