Other associated drugs that may be found in the operating theatre include sedatives, generally benzodiazepines such as diazepam, lorazepam, midazolam and temazepam (see Chapter 11). These help relieve the anxiety and fear that patients naturally experience before undergoing an operation. Opioid analgesics such as alfentanil, fentanyl and remifentanil have a rapid onset of action and are used to ensure a pain-free procedure. Muscle relaxants such as atracurium, rocuronium, vecuronium and suxamethonium are used to prevent spasm during surgery and also to allow the insertion of a tracheal tube to assist breathing (intubation). As with the general anaesthetics themselves, the use of these adjunctive drugs is a specialist area.
