Being in a Muddy Place

When starting the interprofessional EBP process, the clinical scholar and the interprofessional team members are often excited about the project, wanting to get started. Problem identification and question formulation, while critical to the success of the project, can feel like being stuck in the mud. The mentor may find it challenging to convince the team they are making progress. A mentor technique may include describing the process of asking the right questions as an art that allows creativity. Important mentor techniques to keep the team motivated while exploring background questions as a precursor to developing foreground questions include the following:

Encouraging the team to regularly share information to answer the background questions

Supporting members of the team to answer the background questions in which they are most interested

Creating realistic goals and timelines for answering the background questions

Keeping the team focused on using the background questions to develop the foreground question
