Working with families

Introduction

This chapter aims to introduce the reader to Family Work in the context of current mental health practice. It makes specific reference to the evidence-based model Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT) and describes the key aspects of the model. The chapter provides an overview of the process of intervention and illustrates this further with a case study. In addition, the author reflects upon her own role as a Clinical Specialist working for the Meriden Family Programme and describes why she feels occupational therapists make good family workers.

Note: For the purposes of this chapter the word ‘family’ is to be seen in its widest sense. Many will perceive family as a biological concept (e.g. parent/child) whereas ‘family work’ as described in this chapter can include biological family, partnerships, sibling relationships, friends, those in shared accommodation – indeed any individual or groups of people that the service user defines as significant within their lives.
