Some Thoughts for the Spouses

Husband or wife, if your spouse preaches, half of you are in the pulpit on a Sunday morning.

You have seen that preaching well is an extremely demanding task. It requires a great deal of preparation. It also requires significant concentration during the sermon itself.

The more you can do to free up your preacher spouse to prepare and then to concentrate, the better he or she will preach.

Try to create the appropriate spiritual environment each Sunday morning. See if you can keep the kids from fighting. Try to keep yourself from fighting with your preacher spouse. Remember that this is a spiritual battle in which you are participating. Stay on the same side together.

When all is said and done and it’s dinner time after church, say happy things only. Have a rule together that any critique and even the most innocuous suggestion need to be reserved at least until Monday. Since you have your entire lives together, be sparing in any criticism from week to week. Your spouse needs your support and cheerleading more than criticism. This is particularly true if he or she has another coach or someone to analyze the sermons.

Having said that, often during my father’s sermons (about thirty minutes in) my mother would casually hold her left arm across her chest and gently grasp her wristwatch with her right hand. Her motion was invisible to anyone else, but for my father the gesture was a subtle reminder: “ENOUGH ALREADY. WRAP IT UP, DARLING.” If at the end of his life he had one regret about his preaching, it was that he didn’t take her advice about sermon length often enough.
