Chapter 15

The Journey of Performing: The Specific Circumstances

Analyzing specific circumstances that deeply define the event of performing enables performers to identify which of their circumstances help free them and which could become obstacles. Known ahead of time, aids can be augmented, barriers turned to allies. Unexamined, the circumstances affect the performer capriciously. Almost every acting approach has some systematic way to gather this information. My approach derives from everyone I have encountered, including former acting teachers and current colleagues. Uta Hagen’s formulation of questions in her books Respect for Acting (1973) and A Challenge for the Actor (1991) remain a primary influence. The following formula is designed specifically for performers to consider themselves in relationship to the audience (rather than as a fictional character in relationship to the audience). Gathering information about the performer as fictional character, if applicable, occurs after this perusal.
