Few things on earth will last forever. According to the Bible, only two things will: God’s Word (Isa. 40:8; Matt. 24:35), and the souls of people—those who believe in Christ, destined for eternal glory, and those who reject Him, resulting in eternal torment (Matt. 25:31-46). At the end of days, the fire of God’s judgment will consume everything else, and He will fashion a new creation (2 Pet. 3:7, 10; Rev. 21–22).

As the apostle languished in the darkness of a Roman dungeon, undoubtedly aware of his impending death sentence, he naturally began to think of eternal things, reflecting on the timeless treasure of God’s Word (2 Tim. 1:13-14).

Paul also pondered the immortal souls of people (1:15-18). Unfortunately, when Paul turned to people for help, most of them turned away. Persecution put their resolve to the test, revealing them to be weak ministers and fickle friends. But rather than becoming bitter, Paul cherished his genuine friends all the more, and he encouraged Timothy to do the same.
