On the south bank of the Moskva River, opposite the Kremlin, is one of the greatest collections of Russian art in the country. The Tretyakovskaya Galereya (Tretyakov Gallery; Lavrushinsky Pereulok 10; Tue–Wed, Sun 10am–6pm, Thu–Sat until 9pm; www.tretyakovgallery.ru) spans 1,000 years of Russian art, from early icons to 20th-century works. The building itself is in the Russian style – an urban interpretation of a boyar’s mansion built in 1900 to house the collection accumulated by the brothers Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov in the late 19th century. The two men, who had made their fortunes in textiles, later donated their collection and palace to the state. On the gallery’s ground floor, the remarkable icon collection includes the Byzantine Mother of God of Vladimir and Andrei Rublyov’s 15th-century The Trinity. You’ll find 17th- and 18th-century portraits upstairs, along with treasures of Russian realism and grand historical canvases. A new extension of the Tretyakovskaya Galereya, located nearby on Kadashevskaya Naberezhnaya, is currently scheduled to open in 2020.

A short walk to the west brings you to the Novaya Tretyakovskaya Galereya (New Tretyakov Gallery; Krymsky Val 10; same hours), housing Soviet and post-Soviet art. The Muzeon Park of Arts next door displays more than 1,000 sculptures including Soviet monuments pulled down in 1991.
