Like many of the towns in this area, where plains meet uplands to produce eerily spectacular vistas, Lares is as scenic to approach as it is to leave. Arriving from the south on either Route 124 or Route 128, you are greeted by a tiny, close-packed community perched on a gentle rise across a valley and shadowed by rugged twin karstic mogotes. Emerging from the east on Route 111 from the karstic clusters of the Río Abajo Forest Reserve, you are taken by surprise at Lares’s anomalous urbanity.
