Land of Fire

There are a number of reasons why Azerbaijan has the moniker ‘land of fire’. According to Persian sources, one of the first names for the country was ‘Aturpatakan’, meaning ‘a place where sacred fire is preserved’. The South Caucasus region is said to be one of the first places where fire was used, and the fire-worshipping religion of Zoroastrianism was strong here until the arrival of Islam.

Today, Azerbaijan’s relationship with fire burns on; at sites such as Yanar Dag and Ateshgah of Baku, through modern architecture like the Flame Towers, as well as the official symbol of the country, where a flame sits among the colours of the national flag.
