After the destruction of most of its medieval buildings in the long Turkish occupation, Székesfehérvár enjoyed something of a renaissance during the reign of Maria Theresa (1740–80), and the town’s well laid-out buildings date from this time. Despite destruction, industrialisation and heavy traffic, the shape and size of the old town remain unchanged to this day and Székesfehérvár has successfully retained its romantic aura. The town centre, now almost free of cars, is a pleasant place for a stroll.
