Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi
Further up the hill is the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola commissioned by the Pope Paul V Borghese in 1612, in honour of the reopening of the ancient aqueduct built by Emperor Trajan in 109. Continue along the upper route of the Paseggiata di Gianicolo to see some of Rome’s most breathtaking views from the Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi 8 [map].
To descend, continue north along the Paseggiata di Gianicolo, arriving at the Piazza della Rovere near the Vatican; alternatively, retrace your steps down to Trastevere. Note, bus 870 from Piazzale Garibaldi runs north along the ridge to Ponte Principe Amedeo.
Botanical Gardens
The Orto Botanico (Largo Cristina di Svezia 24; Apr–Oct daily 9am–6.30pm, Nov–Mar until 5.30pm) dates from the 1880s, when it was structured out of the 17th-century gardens of the Palazzo Corsini. The stepped, terraced gardens are still in existence and have an amazing array of exotic and rare plants as well as historic species. A series of fine tiered fountains can be found along the hidden paths up the hill.
