La Rocca

Retrace your steps back past the cathedral and along Via Gombito to Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe. If you have time, divert left from the piazza along Via alla Rocca and climb up to the 14th-century Rocca 8 [map], built on the foundations of the Roman Capitol by the Visconti and reinforced by the Venetians. This is the highest point of the city, with fine views.

Via Solata, off Via Rocca, is home to Osteria di Via Solata (for more information, click here), arguably the best restaurant in Bergamo.
