“What do you mean we can't come back?”

Sharon Barone sat in one of the telephone booths at the Ferry Building, her two girls squirming on her lap as she spoke to her husband Paul back at Alcatraz.

“I'm sorry, honey, but we're on lockdown. Nobody on or off until tomorrow. It's obviously crazy here. I'm lucky to get a few minutes to take your call.”

“What am I supposed to do with the girls? Where do we sleep tonight?”

“Do you have the number of my cousin in San Jose?”

“San Jose? But Paul –”

“I'd rather you and the girls be there than here.”

Sharon looked at her girls, patiently sitting on her lap, and smiled. “I worry about you.”

“I'll be fine, we're pretty sure they're dead, floating somewhere in the bay.”

“Those poor men.”

“That's the chance they took, Sharon. Look, I gotta go. Call Gene and he'll come and get you. Love you.”

“Love you, too. Girls, say 'I love you' to your father.” Their screams of “I love you” echoing loud enough to draw the attention of several people walking past the tiny phone booth.

“Are we going home now, Mommy?” Stephanie asked.

From the phone, Sharon heard her husband urgently say “You have your hands full. I'll call you at Gene's later, if I can. Gotta go.”

Paul hung up, but Sharon longingly kept the receiver to her ear until she heard the dial tone return. As she returned the phone to its cradle she said, “Hey girls, who wants to have an adventure and visit Uncle Gene?”

“Uncle Gene, oh we like him,” Katherine said.

Stephanie nodded and added, “Yea, he's got the hot dog puppy.”

“That's right Steph, he has the dachshund. Well daddy is having a really busy day today so we're going to visit Gene and his dachshund and your cousins, too.”

The girls cheered again. Sharon sighed as she dug into her pocketbook for another dime. Being married to an Alcatraz prison guard was proving to be a lot more interesting than advertised.
