Self-coaching as a way to push yourself into new thinking

* * *

Another area of finding innovation is always there with you. It is actually right inside you. You just have to tap into it. Sometimes you need to push your thinking in order to really get to the bottom of a problem. However, we humans can only think through a problem so far in our mind. In order to peel the onion further we need to shift our approach and the best way to do this is via simple coaching. Using the right process, you will be asked some fundamental questions and you can tap into this yourself easily. I have had good experiences with the following:

1.Grab a friend/colleague/mentor.

2.Briefly describe the situation/problem. The other person should not say anything.

3.Let the other person ask you “Ok, what could you do?” You then answer.

4.After your answer, the other (person, team etc.) should ask you 5 times what I call the “Nespresso question”. Like George Clooney: What else? What else? What else?

Typically, after the 2nd or 3rd What else? we leave standard thinking and explore new avenues. No expertise is needed from the other person, their sheer presence helps us to dig deeper. The most important thing is to get going and to add self-coaching to your portfolio of strategies.

Broaden your thinking and start to do the exercise here and now. Think about one problem or area, something that you have maybe already mapped out in the Spaghetti process. Write it down here.

Key area where you want to apply the Spaghetti Principle:

Now, give this book to a friend, co-worker, any person whom you trust. Tell them to ask you the 6 questions below and have them write down the answers.

What could you do?

What else?

I hope you have pushed yourself to complete this exercise. Because, if you are like most people, it was relatively straightforward to fill out the first 2-3 lines. After that, it was likely to be harder. You moved into something which Daniel Kahneman calls “Slow Thinking”. Where you truly have to go deep to find the answers. Where you push yourself forward. Here is where the true gold lies and new ideas for throwing come up.

This approach also works when you lead others. Very often the leader is in a situation that he or she knows more about than the team and can guide through experience on what to do. So far, so good. But what about a field that is new to all? Taking an approach and saying “I know it all” is not the right one here. In this environment, a different leadership style is needed as we see in the matrix below if, also as a leader, we also have the mindset of “Not Knowing” we can go on a journey of mutual exploration leading to new insights and ideas that can be thrown at the wall.
