"What was that all about?" I asked once Damian had left the flat.
Silver dragged his hands across his face without answering.
"That whole conversation went way over my head."
"Everything?"
"Well, I got the fact that he pushed Josh. But I don't understand why it's such a big deal. It wasn't like he hurt him. And what kind of important date is it he forgot about? What's so important about this month?"
Silver rolled his head to the side, where it rested against the back of the sofa. "Damian's got a traumatic past. I'm talking very traumatic here, like Josh's past, but they haven't had the same experiences. Something you never recover from. Something we all have in common, I guess." The last part came as a muttered add-on.
I stared at him. What had happened in his past to make him say something like that? What did he have in common with Damian and Josh?
"Is it something you can tell me about? Or have you been sworn to secrecy?"
He focused back on me. "Not really. It's just never been a topic that's ever come up before. You know Damian used to live with his uncle and aunt, right?"
Well, I hadn't known that, but I had heard mention of them, so I nodded.
"That's because his whole family's dead."
"What happened to them?" I curled my legs under me and folded my hands in my lap, giving him my full attention.
"It was a, uh, murder-suicide. His mum did it."
My eyes widened in shock. I didn't even have words. How could I possibly have anything to say after such a horrifying story? I didn't even have details and I found it traumatic just to hear about it. What must he feel like, having experienced it⦠or had he? "Where was Damian?"
"He was there. She thought he was dead, and so she killed herself last."
"Oh, my god." That was all I could articulate. My own mother seemed rather sane and nice at the moment. She'd never once hurt me, though I guess neglect was hurtful in itself? At least I'd never been physically hurt.
"Yeah. It's tragic. And the anniversary's in a few days. He's always a mess this time of year." Silver sighed, then put one hand on my folded knee and squeezed.
I wanted to ask what'd happened to him, but he'd never mentioned it to me before, and it hadn't been a part of the conversation he was explaining to me. So I didn't dare ask. I didn't want to be shut out. If he wanted to share, he would, eventually, without me prying into it.
"And what about Josh? Why was pushing him away so bad?"
"I told you Josh is borderline. How he's got difficulties controlling his emotions. Well, it's a lot more than that, but that's the most obvious trait of it." Silver turned his head to stare up at the ceiling. His hand didn't leave my knee, though, which was nice. "Another part is this black-and-white thinking. Things are either all good or all bad, and just the tiniest little thing can switch that perceptive.
