TWENTY-EIGHT

Ghost Town

Jack was in a second-floor bedroom of Wade’s home keeping watch when Lucy stepped in.

“Hey, Jack. I’m taking over watch for a couple of hours so you can go eat and take a break.”

“Thanks, Lucy,” Jack said gratefully. “That’s a great help. I’m starving and my back is killing me. I can eat and get some pain meds.”

Jack found Alison in the outdoor kitchen area.

“What’s for dinner, Mom?”

“Stewed elk in gravy and rice,” Alison replied.

“Who made it?”

“Your dad.”

“Nice. Is it good?”

Alison grinned. “What do you think?”

“Dad’s cooking is the bomb!”

Jack filled a plate and sat at a folding plastic table. He scarfed down his dinner and drank some water. Just when he finished eating, Nate showed up, piled a plate high, and sat down next to Jack and Alison.

“When you guys are finished eating, JD and Tom want to talk to you about what you guys decided about the quarry,” Alison said.

“Mom, are there any more pain meds? I’m hurting bad,” said Jack.

Nate nodded. “Me too.”

“Let me check your wounds here in a minute, and I’ll go get more comfrey ready for you.”

A few minutes later Alison came back with her first aid kit and gave each of them some Aleve to help with the pain and inflammation. She had Jack remove his shirt and checked his bruise, then she checked Nate and changed his dressings.

“You’ll be good in a day or two, but you’ll hurt for a few weeks,” she said.

When Alison was done doctoring their wounds, Jack and Nate went to find JD to give him an update and talk about what they saw at the quarry.

“So how did it look?” JD asked. He’d been at his and Alison’s trailer. “Will it work to stash supplies?”

“It looks like no one has been there since the attacks,” said Jack. “It’s all locked up with chains and padlocks. We could just cut the lock on the gate and replace it with one of ours. There are three storage containers. Two of them have locks on them, and we didn’t check what was inside. One wasn’t locked and it was mostly empty. It just had empty pallets in it. I put my pack in the empty one to see if someone took it or if it’s been empty for a while, but I doubt anyone has been there. It’s way back in there. The gate is at the main road, and you can’t see it from there. It just looks like a closed road. We could store food, ammo, fuel, survival gear, and a side by side or jeep in that empty container. We could even hide out there if we needed to.”

“That’s great. We’ll start moving supplies over there when you two are all healed up. I don’t want to do anymore excursions until we are all healthy,” said JD.

“I want to start training Lucy on gun safety and how to use them,” Jack said. “I need to train Anne on a rifle, and she needs to carry a bigger sidearm.
