CHAPTER 11

Another night has gone by with Adrien and I wake up to find him next to me, not lying beside me but crouched on the edge of the bed with his hands gripping his face.

“Everything okay, Adrien?” I ask him gently.

“No, not at all,” he says, sharp and cold. I crawl over to wrap myself around him, but he jumps up the moment I’m next to him. “I never wanted you to see me like this,” he says, ripping at his hair.

“Like hung over? I’m not really sure what you mean?”

He ignores me and is pacing up and down the apartment, shuffling things around in frustration. He sits back down on the bed and pulls his knees into his chest, burying his head, rocking himself back and forth. I can hear his breaths grow heavier.

“Adrien! What is wrong?”

He rips at his hair again, letting out a frustrated cry. “I woke up this morning and I just want to use so fucking bad. It’s the worst it’s been since the last time I relapsed. I just want one fucking taste. A little bit, a little fix is all it takes to silence the drilling thoughts in my head, and it’s so fucking tempting to give in.” He is on the verge of tears and his words terrify me. I have never seen him or anyone in this state. I have no experience with addiction, let alone one this severe. My only instinct is to hold him and give him comfort so I lean toward him again. This time he lets me wrap myself behind him.

“You can’t give in. You have to fight the urges. I wish I could take it all away for you. I really wish I could.” He turns around and burrows his head into me. I can feel his heart racing and his hands are starting to shake.

“It’s like a nightmare you can’t awake or escape from. My brain is wired for it now. It’s like I can taste it, smell it, practically feel the sensation, but then it’s ripped from me and I’m left with such an intense anxiety and my mind convinces me heroin is the only way to stop it.”

“That’s absolutely awful. I can’t even imagine. Please tell me if there’s anything I can do to help.”

“It’s not an easy thing to be around. I don’t expect you to stay here with me. It’s a battle I put myself in and only I can face.”

“I’m not going to leave you! I will stay with you. I don’t want you to deal with this alone.”

He lies back down on the bed, bringing me down with him while he curls up into me.

“You are seriously an angel. What did I do to deserve meeting someone like you?” My smile is my only response, and I let him lie on my chest until I feel his breathing start to ease and he rests his eyes.

I reach over to grab my phone and see there are lots of missed texts from Steph from earlier this morning.
