Chapter 19

Rachel rolled over in her log bed and checked the time on the clock that sat on the nightstand. 7 am. She glanced at the window above the small sink – instead of the bright blue sky she had hoped for, gray greeted her. She groaned. Flashbacks from the previous night swarmed her brain like a swarm of wasps. His embrace. His kisses. His words. Her response. Their ardor. Re-living those moments caused a heat to come to her face. After walking her to the cabin she shared with Megan, Nick had placed a gentle kiss on her cheek and wished her a good night. If that meant difficulty sleeping and tossing around half the night, then yes, it was good. Otherwise, it had been a sleep-elusive, not-so-good night.

“I see you’re awake.”

Megan’s voice greeted her from the nearby rocking chair. Rachel looked at her. Her younger sibling sat with a book in her lap and a steaming cup of coffee in her hand.

“And I see by your face you have something to tell me.”

Rachel averted her head and looked toward the large window of the cabin. She wished for the birds to return and distract her ... and her sister. Instead, Megan held out the mug and commented, “I think you could use one of these, right?”

Rachel nodded but still kept her head turned.

“Yes, please.”

Megan exited the chair and took a step toward the kitchen. She then looked back and said, “Merry Christmas, Rachel.”

Rachel glanced at her sister and gave her a brief smile.

“Merry Christmas to you, too.”

After a quick head nod, Megan moved to the kitchen and grabbed a coffee cup etched with a moose on the side. She poured the hot, dark liquid into the mug, stirred in a packet of sugar and a dose of creamer, stirred the coffee and then walked back toward Rachel, who took the cup from her sister’s hand.

“Thank you. Such a great Christmas gift!”

Megan sat in the rocking chair again and looked at Rachel.

“So tell me what happened.”

“Happened? Nothing happened. I went for a walk last night while you slept. I came back. That’s it.”

“That’s a lie.”

Rachel quickly looked at Megan. Her sister’s blunt assessment caught Rachel by surprise.

“I always know when you’re not telling the truth, which is rare, but I know you, Rachel. What happened?”

Rachel sighed and glanced toward the windows again. She took a deep breath, and, holding the coffee mug with both hands, she then answered, “I saw Nick. We were gazing at the stars, and, well, he kissed me.”

The chortle from Megan caused Rachel to look at her. Smiling, Megan said, “That’s wonderful! I thought something like that must have happened. You were pretty restless during the night.”

“You noticed that, uh?”

“Of course. I’m a mom, remember? I always heard my children ...”

She stopped and looked at Rachel.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Rachel waved her words away.

“Don’t be. We both know I can’t have children, and it’s something I accepted years ago.”

“Yeah, but, how Dylan ... well, you know.”

“Yes, but I really believe it was more than me not being able to have kids.
