“We figured it out!” I say to no one in particular when Matt and I burst in the conference room. Everyone turns to us.

Nolan pops back up on the screen, sipping a steaming mug, and asks, “Who figured what out?”

Matt looks at me and nods, and it’s my cue to continue. He’s giving me the spotlight to share the idea, even though it was something we figured out together. I hold his eyes and nod back, promising I’ll unpack how that makes me feel later, with the support of a glass of wine.

“We can combine the best of both campaigns.”

Josh sits in his chair, motioning to us that we have the floor and should continue. I fill them in our idea and the room is silent. I feel Matt step closer, his arm brushing my back in solidarity.

Nolan finally speaks. “I love it. It balances our two best attributes and is unexpected with the pitch to include women. Speaking to them as the primary audience will elevate the brand in their eyes. It’s brilliant.”

Holy shit. This is way beyond spit-on-your-neck fantastic. Nolan likes—loves—our idea. For a moment, I’m stunned, so still I don’t even feel myself blink. Relief and happiness wash over me and I stumble backward a bit. Matt’s hand is firm on my lower back, supporting me. Like he has been since the beginning.

Naomi is the first to jump in. “There are great opportunities to deliver this over social as well. We can create profiles of each woman and post videos of their day, highlighting how Imperial helps them get through it—both looking and feeling better.”

Jeremy snaps his fingers and points across the table. “Naomi is spot on. We know which sporting events skew a female audience so we can strategically place ads.”

Jose and Sarah are huddled together, whispering to each other, and flipping through boards, already collaborating on the aesthetic plans. I see the two teams combine efforts seamlessly, without a hint of pushback, and my chest fills with pride. This rush of knowing we have a great idea and the sense of camaraderie is energizing. This is why I love advertising—it’s late nights and high stress, but it’s just as much creativity and chemistry.

Matt’s hand drifts up to my shoulder and he squeezes it, smiling at me. “You did it, Em. There’s no doubt they’ll love it when you pitch it in Texas next week. You’re going to win this account for DMG.”

I close my eyes and, for the first time in weeks, I exhale as tension releases from my body. The first step is done. I think we may actually have a shot at this. I’m elated. I’m also suddenly so exhausted, but there’s no time to think about that. As if they sense it, the team jumps in, allowing me a moment to collect myself.

I turn toward Matt, scanning his face, and see nothing but pride. This good, solid man has done nothing but try to get to know me. To protect me. Help me.
