Chapter Sixteen

I see every second of every minute, and every minute of every hour as the night dawdles by. My spinning mind won’t allow me to drop off , but I haven’t got the energy to get up, either. I must thump my pillow into a hundred different positions as my dark thoughts conspire against me sleeping. But no way am I giving in and taking a sleeping tablet. I’ve been so out of it each night for the last two or three weeks that I’ve wondered if the doctor has started me off on the wrong dose, or if the pharmacist has given me stronger tablets than they should. But perhaps it’s me, getting muddled and taking more than I’ve been prescribed. I don’t trust myself at all these days.

Then there’s the anti-depressants. Because I’m already woozy from the sleepers, the anti-depressants make me feel deathly sick and completely unable to function – which all has the knock-on effect of making me even more depressed. After all, how is it possible not to feel low when so ill and completely useless? And I can’t get Gary’s words or Julie’s hostility towards me out of my mind. The more I try to get to sleep, the more it all whirrs around.
