Tim stepped around stacks of boxes as he made his way down the hallway. The new house in Blakeston had been lived in for nearly a week. The first night in the house, he and Maggie unpacked the kitchen and the bedroom. The rest of the house was still boxed away, but Tim knew it wouldnât stay that way for long. It was Sunday, and Tim sensed he was in for a full schedule of unpacking, moving furniture, and carefully avoiding a back injury.
âLetâs get this stuff unpacked later this week,â Tim said as he entered the kitchen. He wanted his intentions for the day put on the record. âWe already have everything we need out.â
Maggie looked up from a checklist she was hard at work on. âNo way, big guy. Itâs Sunday, and we have the whole day to get the house in order.â
He walked around behind her and glanced down at the list of moving-related honey-dos. He needed to mentally prepare for the day ahead. He also wanted to get his arms around her before she put pants on for the day.
âIf purgatory exists, Iâll be spending it moving heavy furniture and boxes ad infinitum.â
âAt least there isnât any football on,â Maggie said as she looked up at him. âNot that there will be any on in purgatory.â
Tim smiled. âI think they let you watch Canadian football, though.â
âIâm pretty sure they just call it hockey.â
A cell phone rang on the counter next to Tim. The number for the Blake County Sheriffâs Office flashed on the screen. He handed the device to Maggie.
âItâs probably Charlotte calling from the jail. You want to answer it?â
âI canât talk to her today,â Maggie said, returning her attention to her checklist. âIâll go see her later this week. Itâs better to talk to her in person.â
âSheâs been calling since her bond hearing on Tuesday, Mags.â
âI know she has,â Maggie said. âIâve been busy wrapping up other cases. She can wait until later in the week.â
Since they worked togetherâin fact, he worked for herâTim tried his best to avoid arguing about work-related matters with Maggie, especially on the weekend. She was the attorney. He was the investigator. Charlotte was her client, and he respected that relationship. Tim didnât need to be told his place in their professional hierarchy. He pushed back at times on her decisions, but he tried his best to offer sensible alternatives only when it appeared his input was needed. Most of the time, though, he stayed away from trying to direct Maggie on how to handle her clients. She knew what she was doing. At leastâhe hoped she did.
âShe just paid a heck of a lot of money for you to represent her, Mags. Iâll pick up and tell her youâll see her next week. I donât mind doing a little hand-holding for you.â
âHer family paid a lot of money,â Maggie said, not looking up from her list. âThereâs a difference.â
Tim held the phone until it stopped ringing, then placed it back on the counter.
