Chapter Twenty-three

Friday afternoon

October 19 — 4:17 p.m. MDT

Denver, Colorado

“Johnny?” Fionn Drayson asked at the doorway to Dr. John Drayson’s small closet of a home office.

John turned toward his voice. Fionn was the middle son of John’s elder sister Rita and his adopted father, Tom Drayson. Fionn had been living with them in Denver while he was getting his medical degree at the University of Colorado Anschutz. In the time he’d been with them, he’d grown from a gangly, awkward seventeen-year-old to a kind, intelligent young man.

John smiled and waved him in. He took off his reading glasses and clicked out of the article he’d been reading on his computer.

“Did I interrupt?” Fionn asked, his Scottish accent only a tiny bit tempered by his years in Colorado.

“Reviewing papers for a journal,” John said. “Nothing vital.”

John read the young man’s posture and facial expression. He stood and hugged Fionn tight.

“Today’s the day,” Fionn said, in a low, nervous voice. “I wondered if you could help with . . .”

Fionn gestured to his tie. John grinned.

“Tom never taught you his trick?” John asked.

“The one where you tie it on the bedpost?” Fionn asked. “Have any bedposts handy? There’s nary a one in the entire place!”

John laughed. He took up the ends of Fionn’s tie and started to work.

“I wanted to ask you,” Fionn said in a low, intimate voice.

John’s cobalt-blue eyes flicked to Fionn’s face.

“What if I can’t be . . .” Fionn nodded and fell silent.

Fionn’s face flushed bright red. As if he were going to run out of the room, the young man shifted back and forth.

“‘Be’?” John asked, mildly, keeping his eyes on the tie.

“Faithful,” Fionn said. “I wondered how you do it, you know, keep your dick in your pants.”

John looked up from the tie. He blinked a few times and then returned to the tie.

“Has it been a problem so far?” John asked.

Fionn shook his head.

“But forever is a long time,” Fionn said.

“What did Tom say?” John asked.

“Oh, Da,” Fionn said. “He doesn’t have that . . . drive. Danny or Will, either.”

John nodded at the mention of Fionn’s older and younger brothers.

“Tom said you were busy in college,” John said.

“Pftt — busy,” Fionn said with a nod. “I like the women. Cian says it’s the curse of the Kelly’s. We’re all horny buggers.”

John grinned at that.

“So what do you do?” Fionn asked. “I don’t want to let Helene down. It would kill me to hurt her in that way. Just kill me, but I . . . I don’t know if I can trust myself.”

“Alex would skin you alive,” John said.

“I imagine that’s true,” Fionn said. “Is there anything for it? Anything that you can tell me?”

“Well . . .” John finished tying the tie and stepped back. “When we were first married, it felt impossible. The first month . . . well, year, really. My whole life had changed overnight. Women still phoned me when they wanted to have some fun. And . . . It was tough.
