Chapter Twenty-Nine
âCanât be. Canât be, canât be, canât be, canât be.â Alicia rifled through the paperwork relating to Columbia, papers flying, fluttering to the floor.
âHey,â Alfie said, âI had a system going on there.â
âWho signed off on the mission?â she said. âWho pushed it through?â
âUS intelligence,â Murphy said.
âWhich means?â
âThe Pentagon,â Alfie said. âOr Langley.â
âAnd who was there in March?â
âLamont,â Murphy said.
âRight.â She tossed more pages in the air. âYouâre better at this, Don. Can you try?â She took out her phone and called Randolph. He answered straight away and she said, âThe story Talbot Blint misreported was a hit on a Columbia-based cocaine factory, wasnât it?â
âYeah,â he said. âWe just confirmed it. You got to the same place?â
âWe have our likely killer in Columbia, advised by US intelligenceâthe CIA or the Pentagonâto attack a badly-researched facility. Half his team are killed in a firefight, civilians are living on-site, but the site is decimated. General Lamont is advising at the Pentagon at the time, and Jonah Keller pushes the intel through, because he doesnât want to lose business. Then, Blint paints this as, what, collateral damage?â
âMore than that,â Randolph said. âHe told viewers that everyone on that plant was either a drug dealer, or living off the proceeds of drug dealing, of death here on Americaâs doorstep. Et cetera.â
âThen, later, we have a hacker, who possibly found out about the bad intel and can reveal some deep dark secret about the mission, but heâs paid off. How Miller found out, we canât tell, but maybe Miller wanted the truth to come out. Maybe he went to Pavla. Or the hacking group.â
âSure. And Brianna Leadley?â
Alicia thought hard, pushed around what she knew. âI can only guess.â
âGuessing doesnât help.â
Murphy said, âItâs him.â He pointed to the signature and the notation below indicating the mission leaderâs name.
Alicia said, âColonel Elon Buckner ran the op on behalf of the Pentagon. Buckner, who sent Scott Hemingway to monitor this case. Heâs the next target, Randy.â
âStop with the Randy. Whoâs the next victim? Buckner? Heâs in Virginia.â
âNo, Scott is the next target. He must have been on the team, one of those who signed off on the mission. He knew all along that something was up. He knew. Thatâs why he tried to steer us away from Columbia. Why he stalled on the Black Lion warrant. Randolph, Scott isnât here to help, heâs here to cover his arse and whatever arses are in the air in Virginia and Washington. We need to get him protected. Where is he?â
âOn his way to meet the British embassyâs lawyers.â
âWe have to move,â she said. âNow.â
