‘We’ve decided what we’re going to do about yesterday,’ Shepherd said to the men gathered on the deck.

After a night in hell, and a wet and blustery day out of kilter with the season, the sun had been restored. Despite its warmth, John felt cold and chilled. Dreams and nightmares had dragged him out of sleep time and time again during the mix of dark and twilight that had filled the hours before – just as they had done for many nights before. He had tussled with his thoughts – hearing Tolbin one moment, Lillian or Lambert the next – moaning and trying to kick their words away, so much so that Mackay the Scotsman in the bunk two or three away from where he lay had growled at him.

‘Will you shut up? Will you shut the hell up?’

‘I’m sorry,’ he whispered, shutting his eyes.

Moments later, however, he was awake again – Lillian exploding into his thoughts. He remembered how they had quarrelled when she finally discovered the nature of his work. Those days she’d spent in Emmanuel United Church came to the fore: she had muttered continually about how mankind had ‘a covenant with the animals’, that we had a duty to care for them and not exploit or misuse them in any way. When he asked what she meant by that, she hauled out an old King James Bible from the top of the wardrobe, pointing out a verse from the book of Hosea.

And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
