Religion was a contested category in imperial China because it held a powerful, central role in society. It provided an alternative source of authority from the government, and from local powerholders. Many lay practitioners of religion ranged broadly over this diverse landscape of institutions and ceremonies, believing in all of them, supporting all of them, and perceiving all of them as facets of a whole. That belief struggled against the exclusive believers, often ordained religious professionals, who saw their religion as the only true one. All of these perspectives on Chinese religious practice produced arguments and constructions of religion that suited their own positions.
