“What do you mean, she is gone?”

Triston’s words thundered in the empty hall. He had ejected Siri’s suitors following her fall down the stairs, while Sir Gavin had returned to his castle to prepare for his bride.

Sir Balduin stood before Triston, obviously distressed. “Sir, I am not yet sure how it happened. Apparently she charmed a handful of your guards into saddling a horse for her and accompanying her and the Lady Lucianna to Belle Noir.”

“Belle Noir? Siri has gone to Belle Noir?”

Sir Balduin limped a hasty step backwards, as though to escape the flash in his master’s eye. “That is where one of the grooms heard they were headed. She gave him this. He brought it to me, but not until after they were gone. It is addressed to you.”

Triston took the folded parchment sheet that Sir Balduin held out to him and stared down at the elegant rendition of his name. Then he flipped the parchment open and read the flowing script within.

Triston—I gave you my word that I would marry and you vowed to me that the choice should be mine. I have chosen Raynor and I go to him to fulfill the promises I have made to you both. I plead him forgiveness, for my sake, for the pain he has caused you, and trust that you will not seek to injure the man whose life now becomes my own.

May God grant you the peace for which your soul has yearned. Remember me please as your Sweet Siriol~~

There followed a wobbly dash, as though she may have intended to end her message thus. But then she had added, in letters apparently composed more in haste than with her usual elegant script~~and know that this shall always be yours.

She had signed her name inside a painted heart.

“Sir, what do you wish me to do?”

Triston heard Sir Balduin’s question, but he did not immediately respond. He placed a finger over the “ol” in her name and gazed a long moment at the familiar diminutive. Then his gaze flicked up to Raynor and the whole letter blurred in a reddish mist.

“We are going to fetch her back,” he snapped. “And if she thinks that out of consideration for her I will not have Raynor’s head on a charger—” He pulled his finger away. “Assemble the garrison and tell them to arm themselves. That wench is yet mine, and she is going to learn that if I have to storm Belle Noir to teach her.”
