Hey. I got Tessa down and am winding down. Give me a call if you can. Iâll wait to hear from you.
Thereâs a softness to Wyatt now that weâve cleared the air. He didnât text much, but hearing him say heâs waiting to hear from me gives me butterflies.
What the hell is wrong with me now? I go from hating the guy to having butterflies?
I finish getting ready and head toward my bed. I decide to FaceTime him instead of calling or texting. It rings for what feels like a second, and a sleepy Wyatt picks up. His voice is groggy, and I know I just woke him.
âHey, Sunshine,â he says, his eyes still trying to adjust to the light in his room.
âIâm so sorry. I didnât mean to wake you. Itâs not too late, so I thought Iâd call you.â I feel awful. Iâm a parent. I know many go to bed quite early. Iâm a night owl, which is something Becca loved when she was up late caring for Olive or studying for a test.
"No. Itâs not a problem at all. I fell asleep reading a really boring book. Sorry about that. It was a long afternoon. Tessa was adamant about going ice skating, and I bet you can envision how crowded it was today of all days. We had to wait forever for skates, and then the rink was packed. But she had such a huge smile on her face, it was worth it. Iâll send you some pictures once we hang up.â
A sweet smile crosses his features, and I canât help the smile I return. He has so much love for that little girl, and I can tell he moves through life to make her happy. Thereâs nothing sexier than a dad who has his daughter wrapped around his finger.
âThat sounds precious. I canât wait to hear her version of events when we return to school. How have her sugars been throughout the holidays? Is it tough to manage?â
Wyatt rubs his hand down his face, attempting to wake up a little more.
âYeah, itâs still a learning process for all of us. This was our second holiday season since she was diagnosed, so I think each year, weâll figure things out more and more. Luckily, sheâs got that positive disposition, so she seems to let it all roll off her back. But I know that this illness will have its ups and downs. I just hope it doesnât take her positive spirit with it.â
I can see the anguish across his face as he thinks about how sheâll have to live with her diagnosis for the rest of her life.
âMedicine has come a long way. Iâve been talking to Becca about the advances in type 1 diabetes, and she gives me updates.â
This seems to bring joy to his features as he points his bright blue eyes my way. I feel his eyes to my core, and I canât help the uptick it does to my pulse.
