Jake’s face lit up when Rosie and Freya entered the gym. They were late, and the session had already begun.

‘Ladies,’ he chimed as he noticed their arrival and walked over, his happy, glinting eyes focused on Freya.

‘A little frazzled, but we’re here,’ Rosie said, chucking her bag down with the others. ‘Our parents were burgled, so we’ve spent the afternoon involved in the clear-up.’

‘Oh, what a nightmare,’ Jake replied, the smile gone from his face. ‘Are they both okay?’

‘They will be,’ Freya said. ‘And thankfully, they weren’t in when it happened, so apart from being shaken up, they’re fine.’

‘Thank God for that,’ Jake said as he made the bold move of reaching out to gently rub Freya’s arm. ‘Are you okay?’

Freya discreetly edged away from his gesture of affection. ‘I’m fine, but thanks for asking. Rosie too.’

‘Wasn’t sure we’d make it tonight,’ Rosie said, picking up on the sudden change in mood, ‘but the train gods were kind to us.’

He moved his hand away swiftly, picking up on her unspoken command. ‘Cheers to the train gods, then,’ he said with a smile. ‘You can join in at the next break, so just relax for now, and I’ll call you when we’re ready to begin the next round of circuits.’

He walked away and continued with his instruction as the other women milled around him.

Rosie turned and looked at her. ‘Why did you do that? He was being sweet.’

‘I don’t think sweet or anything else is a good idea at the moment.’

‘But from what you’ve told me, you two were getting along so nicely at the pub. He seems pretty infatuated with you.’

‘That’s just it. I don’t need someone infatuated with me. It’s too complicated. Liam was infatuated too, and look how that turned out.’

Rosie’s expression softened. ‘I know, I understand, but not everyone is like Liam.’

‘What if I don’t care? And what if I don’t want Jake pulled into this mess? Can you imagine what Liam would do to him if he ever saw that I’d moved on with someone new?’

‘You don’t know what Liam would do.’ Rosie glanced over her shoulder at Jake. ‘But you may want to let him down gently. I think he’s keen.’

‘I will,’ Freya said with a sigh. ‘I shouldn’t have had that drink with him the other night. That was stupid of me. I’ll speak to him later.’

‘But if you want to turn him down,’ Rosie said, ‘please take a minute and remember that you need people around you. Even if you’re just friends. Don’t push him away completely. You can’t live holed up in that small flat forever, alone.’

‘No, maybe not, but it’s just fine for me now.’ Freya knew that what Rosie was saying was true, she was already starting to feel the small beats of loneliness in her heart, but it was safer this way. No complications. No misunderstandings and no harm of being hurt again.
