18. High hopes
Now
I look Mr. Aschen in the eye. âCanât you see? David trusted me. He gave me the power to decide what would happen. How could he have been using me, if I had control?â
âThose are only words, Jacob. He only told you something to make you feel important. Heâs a manipulator. How did this end? Did you get to decide Eurekaâs fate? You have to look past the words. You have to look at the numbers, at the math. The math doesnât lie.â
I lean back in my chair. If I try, I can reach the opposite end of the room with my foot. I donât want to answer this part.
Mr. Aschen sighs and folds the manila envelope closed. âDo you mind if I ask you a somewhat petty question, Jacob?â
I cross my arms. âThatâs all weâre doing here, right?â
âWhy did you stop coming to counseling sessions with me?â
âYou donât need counseling when youâve got Eureka,â I tell him.
âDid David tell you that?â
Well, not directly. I donât answer this, either.
Mr. Aschen puts the black and silver pen into his shirt pocket and folds his hands, all graying dignity. âI only ask because I stopped doing volunteer work when you stopped coming to our sessions. I was a bit disappointed to learn David was a suitable replacement for me. Well, not suitable, obviously.â
âNot David. Jesus, Mr. Aschen, I keep trying to get this across to you. Itâs not all about David. Itâs Eureka. The idea might have come from anywhere. You just keep bringing up David because you think Iâll say I secretly hated him, that I killed him. I didnât.â
Mr. Aschen only raises an eyebrow and grins again, like a poker player whoâs confident in his hand. âYou found me out. But, reallyâI miss our sessions. This may be bad of me to say, but I never managed to connect with the others in your gang.â The aging psychologist emphasizes the word. âYouâve always been my favorite. I think you have the most potential, even more than David.â He speaks into his folded fingers.
âNow youâre the one whoâs manipulating. Isnât it bad form to pick favorites?â
âThey arenât my clients anymore,â Mr. Aschen informs me. âSociety failed you, Jacob. You and your friends have been mistreated. But, out of the whole sad mess of Broadway Trailer Park, youâre the one I thought I had the most hope of reaching. Unfortunately, David took the opportunity from me. You canât see it, Jacob, but youâre infatuated with him. Heâs the only male role model youâve ever had, and youâve come to think of him as your father figure.â
Denial springs eternal. âLet me just tell you what happened next, all right?â
