Pilar didn’t say anything. She just sniffed, holding back tears.

“Listen, I wouldn’t be a good teammate if I didn’t call you out when you’re having issues, Pilar,” Julia continued. “Your rookie mistakes could hold the team back.”

Christina, Shea, and Sarah overheard Julia. They all got into the conversation.

“Julia, you don’t have to make Pilar feel bad,” Christina said.

“Yeah,” Shea added. “We lost as a team. It wasn’t all her fault.”

Sarah walked over to Julia. “Plus, you have no idea how hard some skills are for her! Pilar was born with only part of her right foot,” Sarah blurted out. “She’s working so hard. You need to back off.”

The other girls looked surprised. They stared at Pilar. She felt her cheeks get hot. She couldn’t believe that her best friend had just told her secret.

“I have never blamed my foot for anything,” Pilar said quickly. She tried to stay calm. “Listen, Julia, if you want to call me out, that’s fine. But you can do it in a nicer way.”

Before Julia could say anything, Pilar got up and walked to the exercise room.

Maybe this hockey thing isn’t going to work out after all, Pilar thought. She was angry with Julia for being so tough, with Sarah for telling her secret, and with herself for not being a good enough player.
