The next few days were very much like the previous two, with outings during the day that Jackson managed to butt in on, dinners in the dining hall where I drank entirely too much, nightmares that I fought to keep at bay, and then finally we reached Sitka and disembarked from the ship, our cruise over. I was irritated beyond reason because I felt as though I’d hardly got to enjoy what was supposed to be a grand vacation with the man I loved. Jack had followed us everywhere, not that Cooper had seemed to mind.

When we’d visited Glacier Bay, Jackson made a joke about someone falling overboard and into the icy water like the ice from the glacier crashing into the sea popping up like a popsicle. Cooper had laughed, but I hadn’t.

When we’d gone to the Southeast Alaskan islands, we’d been investigating the tidal pools and looking for shells and other treasures on the beach, and Jackson had crushed the few shells I was getting ready to pick up with an ‘oh, sorry, didn’t realize you wanted that’ before smirking at me. I wanted to fling sand in his face, but I didn’t think Cooper would like it if I did, so I’d simply given him a slight nod.

On our final day out, here in Sitka, we’d gone to visit St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, and all he’d done was disparage the beauty of it. I had been highly annoyed because I’d really wanted to hear about the history of the church and about the city, but Jackson was being so obnoxious that I couldn’t really hear anything the guide was saying. He wasn’t loud enough to disturb any of the other guests, just me, as he made a point to speak to me and Cooper anytime the guide began to talk. As though what he had to say was more important.

Cooper didn’t seem to notice that I was pissed off though; he never told Jackson to be quiet, or to back off, or that we wanted to have some time to ourselves. He just laughed and made jokes right along with Jack.

Now that we were on our way to the airport, I continued to hold my tongue. I still had to endure a short flight with Jackson, and I didn’t want to get into an argument as we boarded the plane that would take us back to Juneau. I was just ready to be done with him tagging along on everything we did. I wanted to spend time with Cooper by myself. I wanted to relax, but I couldn’t with Jack around. Cooper hadn’t said whether or not we were going to stay in Juneau, at least he hadn’t said anything in front of Jackson, and I hoped that would hold true. However, I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

We settled into our seats. I took the window, and Cooper sat next to me on the aisle, with Jackson in the aisle seat directly across from us.
