Dennis is busy going through files and has picked many of them up off the floor.

Herb is busy knocking occupiers’ heads somewhere inside the building, as someone had thought it smart to bust up the toilets. He is a little put out with Vernon Bellecourt and says, “Damn, half of them in here are whiter than you, Vernon! Are you letting any wayward fuck just walk in here?”

Dennis speaks up for the defense. “They’ve been joining us since the streets. And a lot of employees were already in here, they stayed, and we couldn’t tell who was who. We needed to lead the workers out or they were going to charge us with kidnapping. Hell, half of them stayed. The commissioner stayed!”

Vernon is not backing down from Herb. “Some good people in here, man. It’s not our way to say go. Shit, Herb.”

“Our way just changed with that riot squad up the road, notice that?” Herb addresses Kola and others who are standing by. “Listen to me now. Line everyone up, and anyone we don’t know is leaving. Or separate them out to another side of the building and put a security line of who we do know between them.

“How can we tell?” Kola shrugs, as there are hundreds inside.

Herb grabs a young guy by the back of his T-shirt and asks, “You are what?” The boy answers, “Navajo.” Herb says, “Say something in Navajo.” He answers, “Yat-ta-hey.”

“You’ll do. Figure it out, man.” He let go of the boy’s T-shirt. “Take him with ya!” Then he stops another man, wearing a necktie. “What about you?”

“I brought my students by to see the new Native Embassy, they just mentioned it on TV. I just happened to be in town with them. I’m Kiowa, dad’s side, mom is Comanche.”

“Ya ever been in a fight before?”

“No sir, not one, this will be my first. I’m a civics professor at U Denver.”

“Hell,” Herb says, grinning, “I’m locking arms with this man!”

“Where’s Crow Dog?”

Dennis points to the stairs that lead to the Map Room, where Leonard Crow Dog is busy planning a naming ceremony. Herb heads straight to the roof instead.
