Scott drags his feet up his front steps after another eighteen-hour day of fruitless searching for Eve. He collapses onto the faded couch, too exhausted even to remove his muddy boots or hat.

But Scott will never stop scanning crowds, questioning locals, and searching abandoned barns like the other weepy family members in the support group that was suggested. Despite everyone else writing Eve off as long gone, his gut screams she is hidden close—so close he can almost smell her shampoo on the wind most nights. Most folks call that wishful thinking or obsession. Scott calls it hope.

In the kitchen, a clatter breaks the house’s thick silence. Scott bolts upright, waiting to hear Eve's lilting "Sorry! I'm such a klutz..."

But there is nothing, save the hum of the empty fridge.

His gut lurches, air crushed from him in a ragged gasp. Habit and memory betray him every moment she isn't here, the house sheltering the ghost of a vibrant woman the town wrote off as dead weeks ago. He curses his foolish belief Eve might return as if from some errand like everyone whispers behind their pitying eyes.

But a blunt smack upside the head by gritty reality won't absolve him from chasing vapor and shadows until Eve is safe at home or he is with her on the other side. He hardly remembers what life was like before her—and he doesn’t want to. Even breathing without Eve is an unbearable burden. So Scott will pick himself up tomorrow just before dawn, suit up for the long day ahead, and continue shouldering the weight...no matter the cost. What choice does he have?
