Mitch sipped his coffee, keeping his hard eyes fixed on Shaun. ‘So, you were present when my son died.’

It wasn’t a question.

Shaun said nothing.

Mitch took another sip of his drink. ‘How bad was it?’

Shaun stirred his coffee for a long time. ‘I don’t believe either of them suffered.’

A big lie.

Mitch narrowed his eyes. ‘Were you the one who ventured into the vehicle?’

‘No. That was another lad.’

‘Toby? Or Gabriel?’

‘Toby,’ confirmed Shaun.

‘So, what did you do?’

‘I held the door open whilst Toby dropped into the wreck. The car was on its side. Wedged against a tree.’

Mitch put down his cup. ‘Did you attempt to get them out?’

The small café seemed to enclose around Shaun. To the point where he felt like he was stuck inside a cupboard box with Mitch. They were the only two people inside the premises. Even the staff had gone out the back.

‘Toby said they were… already gone. And they were trapped. The fuel tank had split and…’ Shaun gulped his coffee.

‘There was nothing you could’ve done to help them?’

‘No,’ said Shaun weakly. ‘It all happened so fast. I’m so sorry. I wish we’d been able to help. I really do.’

Neither of them spoke for a good minute as they drank their coffees.

‘We were never named in the papers. How did you find out our names, Mr Cunningham?’

Mitch cleared his throat and sat up straight. ‘Cameron Tucker. Well, not him specifically. He contacted an old friend of mine. Who then notified me the moment he found out. Cameron said his partner, Bella, had received a very interesting visit this week from a young lady called Gracie Teesdale.’

Shaun wondered if he should confess to the fact that he’d been with Melinda Teesdale in the moments before he’d met Mitch.

Or does this wily old bloke already know this? He wouldn’t put it past him.

‘I’m curious why Gabriel’s grieving family seem so interested in a car crash that happened over three decades ago. Aren’t you?’ Mitch eyed him carefully. ‘Bella Tucker is Carrie-Anne’s half-sister, by the way. In case you didn’t know.’

‘I didn’t.’

‘Cameron said this Gracie was a real chatterbox. Told Bella all the names of those at the scene. Gabriel’s family is very intrigued as to why he never mentioned the incident. Not once. Not even to his own wife. Weird, right?’

Shaun put his cup to his lips, only to discover the drink was empty.

Mitch leant in closer to him and his eyes clouded with anger. ‘So, Shaun, is there anything else about that day you need to tell me?’

Shaun tried to stop his hands from trembling. He wanted to turn away from the man’s cruel gaze. ‘No, I’m sorry. I understand you want answers, but the truth is we were just kids. I wish we could’ve done more. But all I can say is I’m sorry.’

Toby’s words echoed inside his head – I think there might be a faint pulse.

Mitch placed his palms on the table and gave him a cold smile. ‘I will speak to Toby Brice next. See if he can remember anything else.
