Chapter Fourteen

Boyd stood with Vidar in their debriefing room after two run throughs of the sim. Kiter was explaining what they did well and what could still use improvement as they watched themselves on the projector screen. When Kiter finished, Boyd’s eyes drifted to the wall clock. Vidar needed to get ready to meet his father for dinner soon.

“It’s getting close to 1700,” Boyd whispered in Vidar’s ear. Giving him a confused look, Vidar glanced at the clock then back. “You need to pick up your dad for dinner soon.”

Vidar’s face skewed up in disgust but nodded and turned back to Kiter.

“All right, Boys, listen up,” Kiter’s voice rang through the room. “I’m going to pass this off to Lee for some advice then let’s run it again.”

“Boss,” Vidar spoke up. “Can I head out around 1745? I have to pick up my dad for dinner.”

Boyd noticed the look on Dae’s face when he said that, but Kiter nodded. “Of course, yeah. Lee?” Kiter turned to him.

“I’m pleased to be here to help you all. My experience with this vault area is little over two weeks so I’ve seen every rotation but that’s not infallible. So, there are three teams of four guards at the entrance of the lift at all times except between 2100 and 0400. That’s our window of opportunity. The four guards within the vault area are twenty-four-seven. However, during the down times as you know there are lasers and infrared. My recommendation would be to not go through the lift. Even the shaft had cameras at that time of day. There is a maintenance hatch here,” Dae showed on the screen and zoomed in. That will lead you here. This hatch opens into the storage room. That room is always kept locked with only the Chief Maintenance Officer in possession of the key. But it can be easily picked from the other side.” He glanced at Boyd who nodded, giddy he had a new opportunity. “That will lead you out here,” Dae showed where the first round of lasers lit the ground and walls. “Then, it’s home free until you get here,” he pointed at the vault. “The door is much more complicated than I think you realize. The one you have for practice is easy. There are a lot of more details, not to mention it’s a heavy ass door. I figured you’re strong Boyd, but it takes two guards to open it.”

“I’ll be with him,” Vidar said.

“Then who has your six?” Dae questioned. “You are supposed to be watching him, you turn away, who watches for you? Just a thought. I’m on shift again in two days, I’ll try to get some images of the vault for you, Boyd but it won’t be easy. You’ll have to bear with me and be patient. It could take some time so as to not draw suspicion.”

“We have the time but not a lot,” Kiter said. “We’d rather you be safe than risk rushing anything and getting someone hurt.
