Promise
The lifestyles of the rich and famous were enviable, and rightfully so. After one week of moving into the estate, I felt like royalty. Thereâs no wonder Janice never opted to leave. Why would she? Everything was practically at your fingertips, and the house staff went above and beyond to fulfill all requests.
Russâs personal chefs did everything to make me feel like a high-profile guest, I assume to make up for the blindside and deadly run-in last week. He did more than enough to earn my forgiveness after stocking my walk-in closet with a brand new wardrobe. Every shoe, pair of pants, and jeans were just the right size and the designer dresses fit me like a glove. I resembled a life-size Barbie doll after spending hours at my new vanity using a few makeup tips Andrew threw my way.
The staff offered stress relieving, full body massages each morning, prepared my bath water, and cooked every single southern dish I requested to perfection on weeknights. The only service I refused was bathing help, but the bathroom rose petals on the floor and essential oils for aromatherapy were a neat touch.
All week I lied to my family about how busy I am with work and cut my phone calls with Chelsey and Andrew short from guilt. My nightly conversations with Logan had come to a standstill ever since I accepted the proposal. I second guessed my decision every other day. Maybe keeping his distance was best for both of us.
My midday routine of making more LinkedIn connections quickly turned into selecting which bathing suit I should tan in and a new murder mystery book to read on the side of the infinity pool. I never owned a floppy beach hat or pair of Chanel shades in my life, but my current scene looked like an ad straight out of Vogue magazine. Millions of women would trade places with me in a heartbeat, so why did I feel so ashamed?
After watching Janice, the twins, and her two nannies at the pool on the opposite side of the house one morning, it reminded me that this life isnât for me. I never aspired to be kept. My dream was to have a career and earn enough money to live comfortably in a small, quaint town where the days drifted and I wasnât constantly running out of time. Iâm sure Janice appreciated living in the lap of luxury because this was her norm.
The estate. Fast cars. Luxury trips on a whim. No sign or word from Kayser made me feel like a contestant on a reality show for a social experiment gone wrong. Was the joke on me? Possibly. To keep my sanity and not get my hopes up too high, I continued reminding myself that none of this is real despite how bad I wanted it to be.
âCare if we join you?â Russ slammed the sliding doors back.
I leaned back on my elbows, tilting my head to see the pitter-patter of feet climbing into the pool, giggling.
