TWENTY-FIVE

CASSIE

It’s not good first-week-at-a-new-job behaviour, but there’s no way I can face being all happy-nicey at work. No way. I need to sort everything out at home first. There’s far more to what’s gone on in the past, and is going on literally under my nose right now, than I’ve been told about. And I won’t rest until I iron it all out.

Jon and I are barely speaking – he stormed off this morning without saying a word – but at least we slept in the same bed, unlike the night before. I couldn’t face a night squished in with Teddy, and the guest bed is still piled high with boxes. We slept back to back for the entire time – I say slept, I spent half the night ruminating about everything as well as worrying whether our bedroom was the room where Jade died.

I’m dressed for work, so at least that’s the impression I’ve given the childminder about my whereabouts today. But instead of driving in that direction, I turn back up Cherry Tree Lane and pull back into our driveway.

But instead of heading up the steps to Tolbeck Cottage, I fumble with the catch on next door’s gate. I inhale deeply, trying to steady my nerves as I stand on Becca’s doorstep. I’m standing in exactly the same spot as Jon was standing yesterday when I saw them from Teddy’s window. Hopefully she won’t just slam the door in my face.

‘What do you want?’ She looks as shocked as she did when she noticed me trying to eavesdrop yesterday.

‘Can I come in? I need to talk to you.’ I tighten my scarf. The rain’s stopped, but the air remains chilly, making it feel more like the dead of winter than the turn into spring.

‘No, I’m busy. I take care of my mother, like I’ve already told you.’ As always, she’s wearing gym pants and a baggy hoodie. I’ve never seen her wear anything else.

I take a deep breath. ‘I won’t take up much of your time.’

‘You won’t take up any of my time. Because I’m not talking to you.’

Her rebuttal hits me like a slap. She reaches for the door to close it, but I instinctively press my foot against it, preventing its closure.

‘Come on Becca. I know we haven’t got off to the best start, but there’s no need to be so bloody hostile with me.’ She must be sleeping with Jon, or at least be wanting to sleep with him. Or else, what’s her bloody problem?

‘Look, if you don’t mind – I’ve…’ She looks down at my foot as though it’s a diseased rat invading her kitchen.

‘Surely you can spare ten minutes.’

‘No I can’t.’ She says the words with such sharpness, it seems she can’t think of anything worse.

‘I only want to ask you a few questions.’ I’m persistent if nothing else. Mum’s always said I can’t take no for an answer.

‘About what?’ She folds her arms across her chest and narrows her eyes, reminding me of a cat.
