‘Yes, cuckooing, of course.’ Watts stops to untangle the lead that David has managed to wind between his front paws. ‘And these days, you can be down and out, and still able to tap a message into your phone, and five minutes later, you’ve scored a bag of the powder that’s ruining your life; that’s probably going to kill you. What a… I don’t know. A waste. A travesty of human invention.’

They pause while Watts unclips David’s lead so that he can trot alongside them, veering off here and there to investigate an interesting smell, or flop onto his side and loll in the long, wet grass.

‘You think if Annette Waring was still around, she’d get mixed up in something like this?’ Hitesh asks. It comes naturally to his mind’s eye.

‘Mm.’ Watts sounds defeated. Hitesh glances across; the older man’s gaze is fixed on the rutted ground as they walk, distracted. ‘She sounds like the sort of person who gets preyed upon. Easy pickings. Easily lost.’

‘Yeah. Are you – are you all right, James?’

‘Hmm?’ Watts looks up, startled from his reverie. ‘Oh. Some days priesthood weighs heavier than others, I suppose.’

Then the dog makes a break for it. A blur of surprising speed, he is suddenly haring off towards the treeline.

‘David, stop!’ Watts shouts, panicked, and begins to run. ‘Hitesh, there’s a busy road that way, there’s a gap in the fence—’

Watts is slow, but the policeman is already moving. He can see the field perimeter and the flash of passing headlights behind the hedgerow. He picks up speed quickly, cutting across the grass with long strides, eyes fixed on the buttercup-yellow of David’s fur.
