One day as I’m walking about as a girl, without paying attention I bump into two people. A huge wave of dark energy comes over me and practically paralyzes me to my core. It feels a lot like the burst of cold wind I felt a while back.

“Oh my goodness, s—so sorry,” I say, quite startled. I slowly start to walk away, but then something inside me tells me to go back. “Excuse me, but do I know you?” I begin to turn around. But when I look, I see that the people are gone. I continue to walk, puzzled as to how they disappeared from my sight.

Then I hear Amber’s voice “Layla! Thank god I found you.” She pulls up beside me and rolls down the window of her silver Fiat.

“Hey Amber—what’s up?” I ask, a little alarmed to see her.

“Just get in, I’ll explain everything on the way,” she says.

It’s suddenly hours later. The roads are long and seem to only get longer. I watch the headlights of the cars in front of us blink all together, almost in sync. Putrid cold air blasts through from the AC vents. I’m uncomfortable, not just from the chill inside the car, but also from the haziness outside.

“This should be working by now. I rewired this thing to act as a location finder, a sort of RD8 device if you will, but the signal still seems weak,” Amber explains, her brows furrowed in frustration.

I look at her blankly as I’m not too familiar with technological stuff.

Seeing my puzzled expression, she goes on. “Oh, just think of it as a high-level GPS tracking system. Like...from the Incredibles!” she beams.

“Yeah, I don’t think I want to be thinking or talking about a movie right now,” I respond, quite snappy.

“Right—sorry, my bad,” she croaks.

“Amber, where the heck are you taking me and why did it have to be now!”

She pauses and looks at me with her big moon-like eyes. “There’s somewhere important we need to go,” she says. She turns away as she abruptly swerves the car in a U-turn.

We eventually make it to a huge building. On the side in bold letters, it says Laboratory of Independent Studies.

“Why are we here?” I ask Amber, quite confused.

“I followed you home when you tried to sneak away and saw you transforming. I wasn’t totally sure, but I waited for you outside and when the door to your house opened a cat came out. All those times you weren’t yourself. Added to the fact that you wouldn’t really talk about it. Also, I know for a fact you don’t have a cat” she explains, her mouth coming into a smile. I was taken aback.

“You know...” I sighed.

“Of course, I know. I’m your best friend and why else would we be here!” she responds through a laugh.

“So, what is this place? And how did you find it?” I ask, as Amber takes me to a back door.

“After I saw you fully turn. I began researching. Everything has to do with the fantastical.
