Imagine for a moment if the spies were unwilling to sacrifice their lives on behalf of Rahab. What if they were so consumed with following their dreams to conquer Jericho and be heroes that they gave no genuine time of day to Rahab? What if they were so obsessed with their own safety and agenda in the pending battle that they were unwilling to risk the rescue of Rahab and her family? What if they didn’t want to be judged by their fellow Israelites for such a gracious arrangement with a harlot, so they told her they’d try to help but then decided they didn’t want to be inconvenienced by it? We can only imagine the consequences of how a self-absorbed “your life for my life” mentality would have played out. Praise God the spies were willing to sacrifice to be obedient to the call of God.

What does Scripture tell us a life of sacrifice looks like? It can look like a lot of things. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” So maybe it’s picking up your friends’ lunch bill or sacrificing your time to help them with a move. Bring them dinner when they have a bad day even if you are busy. Maybe you could watch their kids. First Corinthians 13:5 says love “does not seek its own.” So maybe a life of sacrifice looks like letting your husband pick the movie or not defending yourself to someone even if you think you’re right. Romans 12:10 says to “give preference to one another in honor.”

So maybe a life of sacrifice is giving your employee a shout-out or honoring your friend with your words. Maybe it’s walking up to your pastor after church and telling him how much you love him.

You will not be sold short in pouring out your life. Are you with me today? Evaluate your heart. Our crazy world needs your sacrifice. Remember Rahab’s life. You can be Rahab. Choose to be.

THE GREATEST SACRIFICE

Jesus willingly endured the ultimate sacrifice in a humiliating, painful death on a cross for you and me. Even unbelievers respect him because of how he as a suffering servant gave his life for ours. His entire life was lived out obediently to prepare for his own sacrifice. He knew his purpose was to offer his life so we could have life.

He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed of our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:3–5)

What compels us to live outside of the exploitative “your life for my life”
