Huntress

That night, I dream that I look fantastic in a super-cool dress with matching leggings. For some reason, the dream has me floating over a stormy countryside on Earth. The skies swirl overhead. Power and darkness churn through the air. I hover above the ground, raise my arms, and pull lightning toward me.

I’ve never felt more complete or happy.

Even in my dream, I decide that this has nothing to do with Gage Beaufort.

Then Roxy’s voice snaps me awake.

“Shake your groove thing, honeykins.”

Blinking, I sit upright. “What’s wrong?” I like sleeping in my refuge for a reason. Roxy doesn’t bother me over nothing. “Did I sleep in too late?”

“No, your parents are on their way.”

I yawn. “How long until they’re here?”

“They’re outside right now. Main entrance.”

Nervous energy zings through me. My parents never pop by without asking.

Something serious must be happening.

Staying in my human shape, I magically dress myself in purple battle leathers and rush for the door.

Mum and Da don’t even bother with greetings. Both wear black body armor and frowns. It’s like they’re ready for war at any moment.

“We got word through some of our demon contacts,” says Mum. “There’s a bounty hunter after Kaps.”

“I’ve gotten the same intel,” I state. “The L’Griffe have had a contract out on her for weeks.”

Da’s eyes flare red with demonic light. That only happens when he’s deep in battle. “L’Griffe. They’re thieves and killers. We should clean out that filth, especially the scumbag King Gage.”

Do I feel like a bad daughter right now? Yes, I do.

Mum gently rests her hand on Da’s forearm. “Stay calm, Tempest. We can deal with the L’Griffe later. What’s important right now is Kaps.”

Some of the angry light dies down from Da’s eyes, but not much. “Do you have enough contacts on Earth? Can you find Kaps quickly?”

“I can, we don’t need to worry. This contact has been out there for a while. If anything, Kaps was excited about it. She saw it as a badge of achievement. And I’ve seen the way she deals with bounty hunters. None of them get close.”

“Not this time,” declares Mum. “There’s some master bounty hunter after her now called Mack.”

I turn the name over in my mind. “Mack. It sounds familiar, but I can’t quite place it.”

“He’s from a secret human group called the Zoetic,” adds Da. “Have you ever heard of them?”

My eyes widen. “Yes, I have. The Zoetic are vampire hunters. Now I remember where I heard about Mack. He’s one of their paladin-level operatives.”

“Paladin,” repeats Mum. “That sounds rather official.”

“Let’s just say that you’re right to come to me. Don’t worry. I know exactly what to do.”

“That’s my Huntress,” says Da.

Mum offers me a shaky smile. “After you find Kaps, please bring her right to us at the palace.”

I nod. “Agreed.”

Stepping out from my refuge, I transform into my dragon form and take to the skies. My parents and sisters are all I have in the world. No matter what, I will not allow them to get hurt.
