Mason stood on the sidewalk outside Dempsey Jewelers. The ferry had just docked, so Del and Rhiannon would be arriving with Tanner any minute. Farrell radioed in that their SUV just hit the island. So far, so good.

Scanning the area, Mason did not see anything suspicious. Not that he truly thought someone on the island would attempt a robbery, especially in broad daylight. But he would rather err on the side of caution. The gems Tanner had purchased were worth a hell of a lot of money, and the most vulnerable time was while they were in transit.

The SUV rolled to a stop beside him. Del rolled down the driver’s window enough to hand Mason the keys to the store. Mason unlocked the door and disarmed the system. He stepped back outside and scanned the area once more. All looked clear. Giving the signal, he took up a guard position as Rhiannon got out of the passenger side to come around and guard the back of the SUV. Del got out as well, watching in the opposite direction.

Opening the door, Mason helped Tanner out and grabbed the lockbox. They moved swiftly across the sidewalk and into the store. Del and Rhiannon followed, locking and rearming the door. Tanner took the box into the back, where his safe was housed. Once the gemstones were transferred safely and both Tanner and Mason signed the receipt, everyone relaxed.

“Welcome back,” Mason said, shaking his employees’ hands. “How was everything?”

“Thanks, Wraith,” Del said with a grin. “It’s good to be back.”

“Everything went fine,” Rhiannon added. “No issues. Though we did meet up with that journalist friend of Grace’s yesterday. He ended up catching a flight back with us.”

“How’re things here?” Del asked.

“Going well. Everyone else is at Oceanside installing the new door locks. Should have half of them in today, then the rest Thursday. Tomorrow’s the auction on the mainland.”

Rhiannon cocked her head. “What do you need from us?”

“Nothing today or tomorrow,” Mason told them. “Go home. Get some rest. Catch up on whatever. Thursday it’ll be all hands on-deck at the inn. We want to make sure the new security system is in place before people start arriving for the Romani fair.”

“Got it, boss,” Del saluted. “We’ll head out now. Tanner? It was a pleasure.”

Tanner gave them a wave. “Likewise.”

Mason turned to the jeweler when the others left. “So how did it go? Any issues from your point of view?”

“None. Honestly, I felt safer with your people than I have on past trips with three times the security. Those two were better coordinated and calmer than a lot of other groups. Even those tense hours when we got too close to the border weren’t bad. I’ll be using you guys on all my future trips.”

Tanner shook Mason’s hand.

“Appreciate it. Just let us know whenever you need us, and we’ll make a team available.”

Mason walked out of the shop. He wondered if he would have time to share Tanner’s words with Miri. Deciding to forego lunch in favor of seeing her, he walked up Main toward Aquarius.
