Peter hears two gunshots in the distance.

Eyeball uses the distraction to attack, rattlesnake eye bulging, his body a yellow blur in the moonlight.

Once more Peter slips away, but is too slow with the counter.

And this continues as they dance about. Each time, Eyeball missing, and each time, Peter’s counterblow coming a split-second late.

The two figures in the moon circle each other: Eyeball with the karambit held forward, tipped up slightly; Peter crouched with the Szabo Express held low.

Eyeball pounces. This time he twists to the left where Peter is dodging. Azrael has no other choice but to meet the karambit with the Szabo Express. The knives clash in a swish of sparks. Then Eyeball is gone, twisting away to the right. Landing on his back foot, he springs forwards like a highly trained gymnast, coming at Peter, the karambit back on the attack, Eyeball twisting one way, then the other, a nonstop combination of moves, Peter able to pull nothing out except defense, trying to find an in and finding nothing, slowly falling under the spell of the man’s supreme knife skills. Eyeball feints one way, goes the other. Peter is momentarily lost, and before he can withdraw, the end of the karambit is stabbing his knife hand.

Michael is guiding Lena through the forest.

She is in shock, shaking mercilessly.

“Where’s Mom?” The girl shivers as they reach it.

She holds on to his hand with both of hers, gripping his fist so tight it is beginning to hurt, her nails digging into the skin. The kid can’t help thinking that both she and her mother would have been better off if Clara had chased them out of the garden with the axe that first day they showed up with Chambers.

“Now you need to stay here,” Michael says as he lowers her into the passenger seat.

She won’t let go of his hand.

“You don’t need to worry,” he says. “You’ll be perfectly…”

Michael doesn’t finish the sentence. Because something in the back of the car has caught his attention.

Peter rubs the hand. Blood drips from a deep slash right across the top, the whole thing aching as it holds onto the Szabo Express. His gray eyes are wide and staring. He studies Eyeball with a new wariness in the light of the moon.

“That hurt, didn’t it?” Eyeball observes.

Peter says nothing.

“And you’re out of breath. You should feel honored. Only one other man has lasted as long as you in a knife fight with me.” His expression goes dark. “But he didn’t make it for much longer.”

Eyeball presses the fight. He circles quickly, changing his feet every so often, as well as changing his knife hand. A two-handed Kali fighter. A new energy has taken hold of Eyeball. He has seen the fear in his opponent.

Once again the words of his
