Chapter Sixteen

A weary sigh left my body loud enough that anyone outside the door could probably hear my frustration. I tried the door handle, but as Ciro said, it was locked. There was no getting out of this room now. I know that we had suspected this would be a trap, but I was really hoping that something would be easy for once. I guess I couldn’t get that lucky though.

“We really should have thought harder about this plan.” Nicolette mused, her hands on her hips. “What now?”

“I think we should make Ciro invisible first,” Giselle suggested. “Get that out of the way, and then we can look for an exit.”

I nodded, then repeated her idea for Nicolette and Ciro to hear. They agreed immediately, thinking that now was our best chance to perform the spell, and we shuffled to the very back corner of the room. It was equally dusty and dingy over here, but at least it was somewhat out of direct sight from the larger barred window and the window on the door.

“How did you guys even find me?” Ciro stared straight ahead, his eyes flicking back and forth in the empty space trying to locate our invisible forms. When I spoke, his gaze snapped to where my voice was coming from.

“We were walking through the village and Nicolette heard something from this room. How did you get in here anyway?”

“I don’t know.” Ciro shrugged. “I woke up here after Malphas dragged us away from your home. You guys weren’t around, so I tried breaking out to find you, but that daemon in front heard me. He told me that there’s no way out and that he would be back later.”

“Malphas probably transported you here on purpose.” I guessed. “He wanted to separate us, but why would he leave me and Nicolette out on those fields? It doesn’t make sense.”

“He’s a daemon, I’m willing to bet that nothing he does will make sense to us.” Nicolette scoffed then turned serious. “Do you think Yulian is in one of these buildings too?”

“He could be.” I glanced back at the locked door, unsure of how we would even be able to get out of here to find Yulian. “But I’ve got a feeling Malphas isn’t going to make this easy.”

I turned to Giselle. “Are you ready?”

She nodded and then raised her hands up to create the necessary seals as I poured my magic into her. Slowly, she became corporeal, and the second she was able to, she began reciting the spell that would turn Ciro completely invisible. Touching the swirl of pinkish magic to his head, I watched in interest as Ciro’s body rapidly lost coloration and fully blended in with our surroundings.

The second she was done with the spell, Giselle allowed herself to become misty, the outlines of her figure appearing blurred, but her voice still audible by all of us. I figured it would be easier if everyone else could hear what she had to say.

“Thanks, Giselle.” I gave her a small smile of appreciation.
