Samantha headed away from the camp the moment there was a hint of daylight in the sky. The weather had grown colder overnight so she kept the blanket draped over her shoulders for warmth. Being green, the blanket had the added benefit of helping her blend into her surroundings more than the pink dress she wore would have.

Although her lower legs were bare, she did have on boots that aided her in traversing over the uneven terrain. While she had taken Brice’s advice and stayed off the road, she had kept the winding path in sight. It had to lead somewhere, and if she stayed parallel with it long enough it would meet up with another road that might have traffic on it.

She was nearly spotted when she passed within a hundred feet of the men who were assigned to watch the road overnight. With their shift almost over, they had abandoned their hiding place and were smoking and talking while they waited for their replacements to show.

Samantha eased past them while moving deeper into the trees. Back at the camp, her absence was soon to be discovered.
